How to think through the ceremonial speech
Purpose: How can you liken your remarks to the goals of the organization you represent?
Audience: Who will be in the audience? What are their goals and expectations?
Logistics: How formal should you be?
Content: What should you include that relates to the group or the occasion?
Organization: How can I use the patterns I know to accomplish my purpose.
Credibility: What can I say that demonstrates I share the audience’s beliefs/interests/values
Performance: What is the best delivery for this occasion?
- Think about your relationship with the speaker
- Think about your relationship with your audience
- Bridge the two
- Your reaction is how the audience will respond
And of course, using -
Ethos, Pathos, Logos, Karois, Rhetorical Devices!
Here are some examples:
Jay-Z inducts Grandmaster Flash into R&R Hall of Fame
Alicia Keys inducts Prince
Mick Jaggar inducts Beatles in R&R Hall of Fame
Giving Words of Wisdom
Jim Carrey Graduation Speech
A very different graduation speech from Maverick Carter
This will be our last set of speeches.
THIS WEEK - Nov. 2-6
1. Watch the three speeches from the R&R Hall of Fame. Analyze each speech for their qualities and rank them according to how well you think they each one thought through the ceremonial speech structure.
2. Use the How to think through... questions to help your shape the analysis. All three of them are doing the same kind of speech for the same organization. What is expected? How well did each of them execute the speech? Who did the best job in your opinion? Why?
3. This paper should be no less than 800 words and no more than 1000. (Based on Times New Roman double space equalling 250 words per page)
4. Place your analysis and in the Week 12 folder.
FOR NEXT WEEK - Nov. 9-13
Create a document that outlines the ceremonial three speeches you plan to do. What are they? Why do you want to do those speeches? How will you plan them out?
We will discuss the speeches during the week. You will start to record these speeches over Thanksgiving Break (in case you want to use your family to help you.)
